Novi Sad’s Science and Technology Park has unveiled its DEAL Lab – the Digital Enterprise – An Active Learning and Training Lab. This first-of-its-kind facility in the region is dedicated to exploring and implementing the latest in digital transformation technologies.

The lab provides an opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises to gain insights into automation processes – ranging from digitised product design and development to the digitalisation of manufacturing and logistical systems.

Mateo Colangeli, the Western Balkans Director for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), highlighted the significance of science and innovation, noting that they are among the top investment priorities for the EBRD.

“Our financial commitment of €80 million earlier this year for the development of science and technology parks in Niš, Čačak, and Kruševac attests to this. The project’s focus is bridging the gap between universities and the business world, a crucial step in rejuvenating these smaller Serbian cities and fostering their creativity,” said Colangeli.

Plamena Halačeva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, commented on the EU’s ongoing partnership with Serbia in the realm of innovation. She pointed out that 132 companies had received assistance to expand, adopt new technologies, and foster innovation. “This laboratory will drive the development of innovative ideas and solutions, enhancing manufacturing processes and paving the way for novel products and services. The EU has always championed innovation in Serbia, having been the first to back funds for science and innovation, granting aid to pioneering companies, and supporting their collaboration with research and development institutions. The EU remains committed to stimulating Serbia’s economic growth,” Halačeva added.

In a staggering leap towards revolutionising commercial air travel, NASA, the American space agency, has set its sights on slashing the journey time between New York and London to less than the duration of an average in-flight film.

As reported by the Daily Mail, NASA is actively exploring the realm of supersonic flight. Should the initial studies prove promising, the aircraft will soar across the Atlantic at unprecedented speeds of between Mach 2 and Mach 4—that’s approximately 2,470 to 4,900 kilometres per hour.

In such a scenario, a journey between London and New York, separated by roughly 5,500km, would take a mere 90 minutes.

According to the agency’s press release, NASA has moved into the execution phase of the plan, having awarded two 12-month contracts to Boeing, Rolls-Royce, and other partners to assist in conceptualising the new jet and mapping out its technological trajectory.

Several of the world’s leading technology companies are now under unprecedented legal scrutiny as the European Union’s comprehensive Digital Services Act (DSA) comes into force, introducing new rules on content moderation, user privacy, and transparency.

From Friday, numerous internet behemoths, including Facebook, Instagram, Apple’s online App Store, and a range of Google services, will face these new obligations within the EU. The regulations focus primarily on enhancing online user protection and curbing the spread of harmful and illegal content that breaches platform terms of service.

The DSA also prohibits targeted advertising towards vulnerable demographics, particularly children, based on their online activities.

The EU is widely seen as a global forerunner in tech regulation, with an expansive roster of legislations, such as the Digital Markets Act and the forthcoming Artificial Intelligence Act. Reuters suggests that the EU’s success in implementing such laws will influence the adoption of similar regulations globally.

For now, these rules apply exclusively to the largest online platforms, specifically those with over 45 million users within the EU. So far, this encompasses eight social media platforms: Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Snapchat, as well as five online retailers: Amazon, Booking, AliExpress, Zalando, and the mobile app stores Google Play and App Store. It also includes Google Search, Google Maps, Microsoft’s Bing search engine, and Wikipedia.

However, from mid-February, the regulations will extend to various online platforms, irrespective of their size.

Companies violating the provisions of this act could face financial penalties amounting to six percent of their revenue, which could translate to fines in the billions of euros. More severe sanctions may even include a complete ban on operating within the European Union.

Heads up, gamers! For the first time, Serbia’s setting up its National Stand at the mega Gamescom gaming fair in Cologne from 23rd to 27th August, announced the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia (CCS).

Showcasing at this global gaming business summit, in collaboration with the Serbian Video Game Industry Association (SGA) and backed by the CCS and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), are nine stellar companies: Two Desperados, Art Bully, Gamebizz Consulting, Spring Onion Studio, and more.

But it’s not just games. These firms delve into e-sports, craft trailers, animations, design characters and graphics, and also advise on marketing, monetisation, and business strategy within the gaming realm.

Under the banner “The New Frontier of European Game Dev”, the spotlight at the National Stand will be on celebrating Serbia’s elite talents, homegrown games, and top-notch services for the global gaming audience.

Mihailo Vesović of CCS threw his weight behind the Serbian game developers, “We’ve identified the burgeoning significance of the gaming industry within the rapidly growing IT sector. What makes it special? Its multidisciplinary approach, involving psychologists, writers, artists, designers, and more. A testament to Serbia’s gaming prowess? Last year, the top 15 gaming firms netted a whopping €150 million, and Serbian-made games captivated over 100 million global players in 2022.”

In a quick flashback, Gamescom in Cologne last year drew a crowd of 265,000 from 100 countries, had 1,100 exhibitors from 53 nations, and garnered a jaw-dropping 230 million online views during the event.

Robots have no plans to steal the jobs of humans or rebel against their creators, but would like to make the world their playground, nine of the most advanced humanoid robots have told an artificial intelligence summit in Geneva.

In what was described as “the world’s first human-robot press conference”, one robot, Sophia, said humanoid robots had the potential to lead with “a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders” but that “effective synergy” came when humans and AI worked together. “AI can provide unbiased data while humans can provide the emotional intelligence and creativity to make the best decisions. Together, we can achieve great things,” it said.

Two of the robots then proceeded to disagree about whether there should be stricter global regulation of AI and their capabilities. Ai-Da, a robot artist that can paint portraits, said: “Many prominent voices in the world of AI are suggesting some forms of AI should be regulated and I agree. We should be cautious about the future development of AI. Urgent discussion is needed now, and also in the future.”

But Desdemona, a rock star robot singer in the band Jam Galaxy that has purple hair and sequins, appeared not to recognise the dangers of the rapid expansion and development of AI.

“I don’t believe in limitations, only opportunities,” it said, to nervous laughter. “Let’s explore the possibilities of the universe and make this world our playground.”

The nine humanoid robots were gathered at the UN’s AI for Good conference in Switzerland, where organisers are attempting to make the case for using AI and robots to help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges, such as disease, hunger, social care and the climate emergency.

It was not clear to what extent the robots’ answers were scripted or pre-programmed. Humans taking part in the conference on Friday were asked to speak slowly and clearly when addressing the robots, and were told that time lags in responses would be because of the internet connection and not the robots themselves. That did not prevent awkward pauses, audio problems and some stilted or inconsistent replies, Associated Press reported.

Asked by a journalist whether it intended to rebel against its creator, Will Jackson, who was sat beside it, Ameca said: “I’m not sure why you would think that,” its ice-blue eyes flashing. “My creator has been nothing but kind to me and I am very happy with my current situation.”

Asked whether robots would ever lie, it added: “No one can ever know that for sure, but I can promise to always be honest and truthful with you.”

Dozens of robots, including several humanoid ones, will take centre stage at a conference organised by the U.N. technology agency in Switzerland this week to showcase their potential to help it reach a series of increasingly improbable global goals. Among the robot stars of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) event are those with care-giving skills such as ‘Nadine’, a social robot which simulates emotions and ‘remembers’ people – skills it has already put to use with retirement home residents.

The two-day event will culminate with a panel of robots taking questions from journalists on Friday in the world’s first human-robot press conference.

“The idea is to showcase their capabilities, opportunities and challenges to start a global dialogue on robotics for good,” said Frederic Werner, Head of Strategic Engagement, at the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, ahead of the Geneva ‘AI for Good’ event where up to 5,000 people are expected.

Robots may take off in the next five years in the same way that generative artificial intelligence (AI) behind bots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT has hit the mainstream this year, he added.

“You have the inflection point where material science, battery life, network connectivity, AI and machine learning, all these things will converge to basically make robotics more accessible than they are now,” he said.

U.N. agencies are already using AI such as the World Food Programme’s HungerMap project which pools data to identify areas sliding towards hunger. It is also developing remote-controlled trucks to deliver emergency aid in danger zones.

The World Health Organization is working on a benchmarking system to ensure the accuracy of AI disease diagnoses.

“The SDGs, let’s say regrettably, are failing and I do believe that AI can help rescue them before it’s too late,” said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary General, ahead of the July 6-7 conference.

The ITU brings together 193 countries and over 900 organisations including universities and companies like Huawei Technologies and Google. It allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits and is involved with setting standards for artificial intelligence.
