The Research and Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia (IVI) has created an “electronic nose”, which allows the robot to “sense smells”, which will be widely used in the medical and food industries.

The IVI Institute presented projects and research teams at this year’s technology fair, from May 16 to 19 in Belgrade, and junior researcher Savo Ičagić explained to Tanjug the characteristics of a device called the “electronic nose”.

“It is a device that allows the machine to smell smells and has a large application in the medical and food industry,” explained Ičagić.

He stated that the entire cycle of products, starting from production and processing, as well as the flow of transportation to the end consumers can be monitored with “nomes”.

“In cooperation with the Institute of Fruit Growing in Čačak, we worked on an experimental project using an electronic nose, monitoring the fermentation process in the production of alcoholic beverages, which showed excellent results,” said Ičagić.

Dragiša Mišković, leader of the “Human Computer Interface” research group, told Tanjug that IVI was founded two years ago with the aim of improving research in the field of artificial intelligence, but also the application of that research in industry, the public sector and other areas.

“The activity of the institute is divided into five areas that include the interaction between people and machines, and the application of artificial intelligence in biomedicine. At the exhibition stand of this year’s science fair, we presented the result of the joint work of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Faculty of Technical Sciences,” said Mišković.

He added that the Institute’s exhibit, shown at this year’s fair, combines the development of an autonomous robot and sensors for different gases.

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia is located in the Science and Technology Park in Novi Sad, and also has offices in Belgrade, Kragujevac and Niš.

The mission of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia is to create a distributed research and development institute that can use the entire research potential in the field of artificial intelligence throughout Serbia and abroad, according to IVI.

“We strive to provide a research environment and support of a world-class level of excellence to our researchers and support the development of the knowledge-based economy from the VI domain in Serbia and the region,” the Institute states.
