In a staggering leap towards revolutionising commercial air travel, NASA, the American space agency, has set its sights on slashing the journey time between New York and London to less than the duration of an average in-flight film.

As reported by the Daily Mail, NASA is actively exploring the realm of supersonic flight. Should the initial studies prove promising, the aircraft will soar across the Atlantic at unprecedented speeds of between Mach 2 and Mach 4—that’s approximately 2,470 to 4,900 kilometres per hour.

In such a scenario, a journey between London and New York, separated by roughly 5,500km, would take a mere 90 minutes.

According to the agency’s press release, NASA has moved into the execution phase of the plan, having awarded two 12-month contracts to Boeing, Rolls-Royce, and other partners to assist in conceptualising the new jet and mapping out its technological trajectory.

Several of the world’s leading technology companies are now under unprecedented legal scrutiny as the European Union’s comprehensive Digital Services Act (DSA) comes into force, introducing new rules on content moderation, user privacy, and transparency.

From Friday, numerous internet behemoths, including Facebook, Instagram, Apple’s online App Store, and a range of Google services, will face these new obligations within the EU. The regulations focus primarily on enhancing online user protection and curbing the spread of harmful and illegal content that breaches platform terms of service.

The DSA also prohibits targeted advertising towards vulnerable demographics, particularly children, based on their online activities.

The EU is widely seen as a global forerunner in tech regulation, with an expansive roster of legislations, such as the Digital Markets Act and the forthcoming Artificial Intelligence Act. Reuters suggests that the EU’s success in implementing such laws will influence the adoption of similar regulations globally.

For now, these rules apply exclusively to the largest online platforms, specifically those with over 45 million users within the EU. So far, this encompasses eight social media platforms: Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Snapchat, as well as five online retailers: Amazon, Booking, AliExpress, Zalando, and the mobile app stores Google Play and App Store. It also includes Google Search, Google Maps, Microsoft’s Bing search engine, and Wikipedia.

However, from mid-February, the regulations will extend to various online platforms, irrespective of their size.

Companies violating the provisions of this act could face financial penalties amounting to six percent of their revenue, which could translate to fines in the billions of euros. More severe sanctions may even include a complete ban on operating within the European Union.

Heads up, gamers! For the first time, Serbia’s setting up its National Stand at the mega Gamescom gaming fair in Cologne from 23rd to 27th August, announced the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia (CCS).

Showcasing at this global gaming business summit, in collaboration with the Serbian Video Game Industry Association (SGA) and backed by the CCS and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), are nine stellar companies: Two Desperados, Art Bully, Gamebizz Consulting, Spring Onion Studio, and more.

But it’s not just games. These firms delve into e-sports, craft trailers, animations, design characters and graphics, and also advise on marketing, monetisation, and business strategy within the gaming realm.

Under the banner “The New Frontier of European Game Dev”, the spotlight at the National Stand will be on celebrating Serbia’s elite talents, homegrown games, and top-notch services for the global gaming audience.

Mihailo Vesović of CCS threw his weight behind the Serbian game developers, “We’ve identified the burgeoning significance of the gaming industry within the rapidly growing IT sector. What makes it special? Its multidisciplinary approach, involving psychologists, writers, artists, designers, and more. A testament to Serbia’s gaming prowess? Last year, the top 15 gaming firms netted a whopping €150 million, and Serbian-made games captivated over 100 million global players in 2022.”

In a quick flashback, Gamescom in Cologne last year drew a crowd of 265,000 from 100 countries, had 1,100 exhibitors from 53 nations, and garnered a jaw-dropping 230 million online views during the event.

Intriguing developments have arisen in the tech sphere with the emergence of “Text With Jesus,” an innovative AI-powered application that facilitates virtual discussions with biblical luminaries. The app touts the opportunity for users to embark on a profound spiritual journey, engaging in enlightening conversations not only with Jesus Christ but also with other revered figures like Mary and Joseph.

As expounded on its website, the app owes its capabilities to ChatGPT, an advanced AI framework. The platform extends an invitation for users to seek solace, guidance, and inspiration through these unique virtual interactions. These revelations came to light through a report by the Religion News Service.

The application’s design is elegantly straightforward. A simple click on any of the “Holy Family” icons promptly elicits a welcoming message: “Greetings, dear friend! I am Jesus Christ, your companion for today’s discourse, offering my guidance and boundless affection. How may I be of assistance to you?” It’s a glimpse into what the AI-powered Jesus might impart.

Robots have no plans to steal the jobs of humans or rebel against their creators, but would like to make the world their playground, nine of the most advanced humanoid robots have told an artificial intelligence summit in Geneva.

In what was described as “the world’s first human-robot press conference”, one robot, Sophia, said humanoid robots had the potential to lead with “a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders” but that “effective synergy” came when humans and AI worked together. “AI can provide unbiased data while humans can provide the emotional intelligence and creativity to make the best decisions. Together, we can achieve great things,” it said.

Two of the robots then proceeded to disagree about whether there should be stricter global regulation of AI and their capabilities. Ai-Da, a robot artist that can paint portraits, said: “Many prominent voices in the world of AI are suggesting some forms of AI should be regulated and I agree. We should be cautious about the future development of AI. Urgent discussion is needed now, and also in the future.”

But Desdemona, a rock star robot singer in the band Jam Galaxy that has purple hair and sequins, appeared not to recognise the dangers of the rapid expansion and development of AI.

“I don’t believe in limitations, only opportunities,” it said, to nervous laughter. “Let’s explore the possibilities of the universe and make this world our playground.”

The nine humanoid robots were gathered at the UN’s AI for Good conference in Switzerland, where organisers are attempting to make the case for using AI and robots to help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges, such as disease, hunger, social care and the climate emergency.

It was not clear to what extent the robots’ answers were scripted or pre-programmed. Humans taking part in the conference on Friday were asked to speak slowly and clearly when addressing the robots, and were told that time lags in responses would be because of the internet connection and not the robots themselves. That did not prevent awkward pauses, audio problems and some stilted or inconsistent replies, Associated Press reported.

Meta Platforms  plans to launch a Twitter-rivalling microblogging app called Threads, days after Twitter boss Elon Musk attracted criticism by announcing a temporary cap on how many posts users can read on the social media site.

Threads is expected to be released on Thursday and will allow users to retain followers from photo-sharing platform Instagram, and keep the same username, a listing on Apple’s App Store showed.

The rollout represents a direct challenge to Twitter, which has faced numerous controversies since Musk bought the company for $44 billion in 2022. Last week, the Tesla billionaire announced a slate of new restrictions on the app, limiting the number of tweets users could view per day, prompting outcry from many on the platform. While alternative microblogging sites – such as Mastodon and Blue Sky – have seen an uptick in user numbers since Musk’s acquisition, neither has been able to challenge Twitter. But Instagram already has hundreds of millions of registered users and has a history of introducing new features based on the success of other social media firms.

In 2016, it added a feature called “stories” to Instagram, or user posts that disappear after a fixed amount of time, in response to the rising popularity of Snapchat.

More recently, the company’s short-form video feature “Reels” has sought to challenge the rise of TikTok.

The launch of Threads represents a credible threat to Twitter under Musk.

“Threads is going to pose a huge threat to Twitter because it’s coming from the Meta and Instagram family of apps,” said Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall.

At more than 7 feet tall when fully extended and with 360 degree vision they’re formidable enough to make any would-be lawbreaker think twice.

But Robocop they are not.

These are the two robots the Singapore Police Force has introduced to patrol Changi Airport following more than five years of trials. And they are just the first such robots the force plans to deploy across the Southeast Asian city-state to “augment frontline officers” in the years to come.

The robots, which have been patrolling the airport since April, are meant to “project additional police presence” and serve as extra “eyes on the ground,” according to the force, which describes them as the latest addition to its “technological arsenal.”

And they are no mere gimic. During an incident, says the force, the robots are able to enforce cordons and warn bystanders using their blinkers, sirens and speakers while they wait for human officers to arrive. Members of the public can directly communicate with the force by pushing a button on the robots’ front.

The Singapore Police Force said Friday that more robots would be “progressively deployed” across the city-state.

“The integration of robotics enhances the operational efficiency and capabilities of our frontline officers, enabling them to be more effective in their duties,” said superintendent and operations head Lim Ke Wei of airport police.

Each robot comes with in-built speakers that broadcast audio messages and a rear LCD panel displaying visual messages. They stand at roughly 1.7 meters (5.5 feet) tall, but have extendable masts that take that up to 2.3 meters (7.5 feet).

They are also equipped with multiple cameras giving them 360-degree vision, enabling airport police to have “unobstructed views” for “better incident management,” it added.

They are just the latest robots to be employed on civic duties in this tech-savvy nation of more than 5 million people.

Earlier versions of the robots were deployed at public parades in 2018 and 2022. During the coronavirus, robot dogs were used to enforce strict social distancing, while cleaner robots are a common sight at metro stations across the country – as well as at the airport. Meanwhile, transport officials are hopeful commercial flying taxis could be a reality in just two years’ time. But even in a land where robots are relatively common, the latest recruits could take some getting used to.

Japan and JAXA, the country’s space administration, have spent decades trying to make it possible to beam solar energy from space. In 2015, the nation made a breakthrough when JAXA scientists successfully beamed 1.8 kilowatts of power, enough energy to power an electric kettle, more than 50 meters to a wireless receiver. Now, Japan is poised to bring the technology one step closer to reality.

Nikkei reports a Japanese public-private partnership will attempt to beam solar energy from space as early as 2025. The project, led by Naoki Shinohara, a Kyoto University professor who has been working on space-based solar energy since 2009, will attempt to deploy a series of small satellites in orbit. Those will then try to beam the solar energy the arrays collect to ground-based receiving stations hundreds of miles away.

Using orbital solar panels and microwaves to send energy to Earth was first proposed in 1968. Since then, a few countries, including China and the US, have spent time and money pursuing the idea. The technology is appealing because orbital solar arrays represent a potentially unlimited renewable energy supply. In space, solar panels can collect energy no matter the time of day, and by using microwaves to beam the power they produce, clouds aren’t a concern either.

However, even if Japan successfully deploys a set of orbital solar arrays, the tech would still be closer to science fiction than fact. That’s because producing an array that can generate 1 gigawatt of power – or about the output of one nuclear reactor – would cost about $7 billion with currently available technologies.

The Research and Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia (IVI) has created an “electronic nose”, which allows the robot to “sense smells”, which will be widely used in the medical and food industries.

The IVI Institute presented projects and research teams at this year’s technology fair, from May 16 to 19 in Belgrade, and junior researcher Savo Ičagić explained to Tanjug the characteristics of a device called the “electronic nose”.

“It is a device that allows the machine to smell smells and has a large application in the medical and food industry,” explained Ičagić.

He stated that the entire cycle of products, starting from production and processing, as well as the flow of transportation to the end consumers can be monitored with “nomes”.

“In cooperation with the Institute of Fruit Growing in Čačak, we worked on an experimental project using an electronic nose, monitoring the fermentation process in the production of alcoholic beverages, which showed excellent results,” said Ičagić.

Dragiša Mišković, leader of the “Human Computer Interface” research group, told Tanjug that IVI was founded two years ago with the aim of improving research in the field of artificial intelligence, but also the application of that research in industry, the public sector and other areas.

“The activity of the institute is divided into five areas that include the interaction between people and machines, and the application of artificial intelligence in biomedicine. At the exhibition stand of this year’s science fair, we presented the result of the joint work of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Faculty of Technical Sciences,” said Mišković.

He added that the Institute’s exhibit, shown at this year’s fair, combines the development of an autonomous robot and sensors for different gases.
